Depends on what you mean by handling it. You can put in a slushy
transmission and torque converter which will handle it fine for the avg
driver. They make them to soft shift so the avg driver doesn't "feel" it
through the gears. If you really want the performance out of your
powertrain and you have done or are going to do modifications to your engine
to increase or get the most out of it you need to work on the transmission
and torque converter as well. You don't need to change to a 5-speed to get
that efficiency. As far as correct automatic transmissions to do the job,
many manufacturers have been falling short for years. Chrysler's just one
of them.

I disagree in part. You don't have to have an auto
for performance or even high performance. You
just have to have the right tranny to do the job.
Sure you can modify any tranny to work or just
buy one already made. I don't think they would
stick a 6 speed tranny in a 500hp Viper, WS6
camero or fire chicken if it couldn't handle the
horsepower (performance). Then theres the
MPG performance issue.

I used to think that but the more I get involved in discussions about
automatics (valve bodies) and torque converters the more I'm inclined to
believe that the automatic carries a definite advantage, performance-wise.
