I don't think it's a rod bearing, since that would be a constant clank
clank.. and will increase with RPMs. He stated that it does it
"randomly???" I'd check around the engine compartment to see if anything is
loose.

Don't mean to scare you but a connecting rod bearing will sound like that!
What does yours oil pressure read? How many miles on the engine? What ever
it is find it as soon as possible before it does more damage!
