I have a 96 Toyota RAV4 that has used .5 qts every 3k miles from day
one. The owners manual says that its normal due to the "new" high
compression engines with laser cut cylinders and all. I've had it checked
at several good Toyota dealerships and they say that it is normal. Did
this vehicle always use oil? If not, then there MIGHT be a problem. A qt
every 3k miles isn't a big deal. The dipstick doesn't even read low until
it's 1 qt low. I would try a thicker oil and monitor the oil usage to see
if it gets worse.

Bye,
Ray
