Hmmm...
I have a 97, 318 also and I usually do the key on off method, and get a code
12 and 51, no problem.
I remember someone mentioning to do this while holding down the odometer
reset button.
I tried this, that's when the dials on the gauges starting going through
their check (moving up and down)
and some dash light came on and off. Then at the end is when I received the
950 and a few seconds later a 900 code. I mentioned this on the DML quite a
while ago and someone came back and said it has something to do with the air
bags but not sure. The reason why I remember this is because at night when
it is completely dark with the engine running and no lights on, the light
behind the air bag symbol on the dash is always very faintly lit, all the
time. Gee, this one stumps dealers and the DML, but I don't think it's that
serious.
