Distributor cap corrosion--anyone?

Today I was changing my old distributor cap, it has
the brass terminal. When I pulled the three plug wires
that sit directly behind the intake manifold, I found
a ton of corrosion on each terminal. It was thick and
powdering, just not a thin layer. In my 28 years of
messing with cars, I have never seen anything like it.
My wife commented it looked like her battery
terminals...gotta appreciate her sense of humor.

This old cap had been on 15k and when I put it on, I
coated all the terminals with dielectric grease. I
checked the back of the manifold and throttle body for
any signs of a leak and there were none.

What I am leading up to is has anyone ever had this
problem on their Dakota? If so, ever find the reason?
BTW, it's a '99 V6 and the wires are Taylor
8.5mm....the boots seem snug.

Thanks
