lighting questions

I have a 93 Dak, and the lights are awful. The headlights appear to be
aimed properly, and are clean, but the just don't put enough light on the
road. I do a lot of night driving, and there are lots of animals (deer,
dogs, cows, etc.) in the roads around here. Has anyone had any luck with
any of the replacement bulbs for the head lights? If so, what works?

Also, the backup lights are no better. Has anyone tried the high wattage
backup lights? My concern is the extra heat they must generate damaging the
lens/housing, and the extra draw being too much for the stock wiring.

I've owned the Dak for two weeks now, and I'm loving otherwise, if it just
had lights and heat.
