Chuck,

The springs are not visible. With the shifter installed these "spring-packs"
are in "wells" in the body of the shift tower on the left and right of the
stick bottom (the portion of the shift mechanism that protrudes through the
shift tower that the shift stick bolts to) covered by small metal plates
fastened to the shift tower with two screws each. Unbolt these and you
uncover two springs, one smaller in diameter nestled inside one larger in
diameter. Remove just the smaller of the two springs (as per the
instructions) and you reduce the pressure exerted on the shaft that the
shifter pivots on and thereby reduce the effort needed to move the shifter
side to side as well as in and out of gear. Of course, if your shifter does
not have this adjustment feature then this probably makes no sense whatsoever
 :)

If you have anymore questions just ask.

Andrew
