WASHINGTON -- The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is
investigating reports of a possible defective steering shaft on
826,000 Ford Super Duty F-Series pickups that could fracture, caus-
ing drivers to lose control of the vehicle. Federal auto safety
regulators began a preliminary investigation in March after a 1999
F-550 pickup suffered a steering gear sector shaft failure during
a durability test. The probe was expanded after the agency received
50 reports of steering failures involving 1999 and 2000 model year
heavy-duty pickups that resulted in 41 accidents and 13 injuries.
