Re: Engine Computer Makers

I tried to give you a lead on what I consider one of the best EFI computers out
there by starting the SEFI8LO thread. If you dig thru the archives you will
find previous mention of this as Jon S. and I had an excellent discussion many
moons ago. I didn't mention any others but there are many. Electromotive,
sdsefi, haltech, Accel, Fel-Pro, Holley, and many more make aftermarket
controllers. Unfortunately its rare to find one that is plug-and-play w/Dodge
motors. I would identify two things first - your absolute minimum requirements
and your price range then go from there. Do some general searches w/keywords
like ECU, PCM, engine management, EFI, etc. and you'll get many hits (at least
w/google.com they do). I think that the sdsefi setup offers alot for the money
(starts around $400-600) but I've only talked to people w/4 and 6-bangers that
have actually used that setup. And as Bernd mentioned Fel-Pro's SEFI8LO is
pretty costly at the high-end starting around $1500 and when equipped w/the
good options (full sequential port efi, individual cyl, and wide-band O2
control) runs around $3000. Expect to pay another $1000 or so for a
professional to install and dial it in on a dyno. It is the stock (and MP/Jet)
computers that we fight the most when trying to eek out the most performance
from these engines. Mostly because we cannot manipulate any of its built-in
tables, settings, etc. But it is there that the most potential lies - and this
is why the aftermarket ones (that can be manipulated) are so expensive. Keep
the questions coming and we'll try and help.

Latr,

Shane
