If you are having 4WD Engaging issues, and even non typical
'sounds'..........try a very simple thing and check the fluid level. Be sure
to use ATF+3 7176 in the NP231 tcase.......anything else and you WILL have
problems. You might even want to try flushing the tcase out and filling it
back up with synthetic ATF+3 7176 fluid. I once used Mobil 1 synthetic
ATF(never again!) and my tcase didnt like it at all....wouldnt even engage
4HI nor 4LO......I flushed it out with 3 quarts of dino ATF+3 7176 fluid,
let it drip out for an hour, and then filled it up with Amsoil ATF(what I
normally use) and it works flawlessly now at 140,000 miles.
