Aaron,
Having it straight out to the side will work, but that will place it
in what is probably the hottest part of the engine bay (directly over
the exhaust manifold or headers). The main reason most intakes that
you see are facing forward is because the tube is bent so as to place
the filter as far forward in the engine bay as possible. This is usually
used in conjunction with removing some of the blockage in the grill
and/or fabricating some sort of heat shield. (The main idea being
to keep the air going into the intake as cool as possible.)
