O/T Chevy S10 Head Gasket?

Ok,
I'm a loyal Dak fan and owner but my best friend has two 93 4.3L V6 S10's.
His wife's was blowing black smoke pretty bad and idling like crap. We have
checked the vacuum lines and what not, and I suspected a blown head gasket.
So last night we change the plugs and on the passenger side plugs are black
gunky and sooty, smell VERY sweet and really look trashed, the drivers side
look normal for the 50K miles on them. Any help would be appreciated as to
if this sounds like a blown head gasket and what kind of job it would entail
to fix it ourselves. He's running pretty tight on money so this will
deffinatly need to be a DIY project. I'm just feeling bad for him and need
any and all advice as to where to start to get her running well again. I
told him to take it to a dealer and ask what was wrong, and then an
independent mechanic (just to make sure we are barking up the right tree).
Also told him to get quotes from both places to see if it's even worth us
doing it or having them do it. We don't mind doing the work, we just need
some help in getting off in the right direction!

Also, does anyone have any good suggestions on sites for his S10's???
Maybe good tech info online?

Thanks for any and all advice (he wants a Dak but can't afford one right
now),
