On my 318 I ran a piece of cable through a hole in the pulley and down
around a frame member (make sure there's NOTHING in the way - wires, hoses,
etc.) and secures that back to itself. There was a little play still but
it worked itself out and we managed to loosen the nut.

There are specialized tools for doing this a lot easier but how many times
will you need it in your life? Probably not worth buying.
