Shawn,

Did you recheck the initial adjustment after pumping the lifters back
up? If not, you may want to dbl-check the adjustment one more time.
(We normally checked them at least twice before reinstalling the
covers.)

Ok, after getting valve lash 101 from you wonderful people I got her to
start and run (Valve covers on cause I didn't read this post till just
now!). My issue now is a VERY rough idle. I did 3 starts, ran her for
45 seconds a piece the first two and the clicking chilled out, the I
took her for a drive to Quick Trip. Smooth acceleration, SHITTY idle.
Once I hit normal operating temp she stalled on me twice when slowing to
a stop at low RPM at traffic lights. Brought her home and popped the
hood, no tapping, no odd sounds, and I looked for a wooden broom stick
to cut in half to use as a stethoscope;-), I didn't find one. All plug
wires are firm on the plugs and the distributor. This leads me to think
that I over tightened a couple or more rockers. Most are good I assume
because she runs, but I think several are still too tight. I guess in
the morning I'll rip her apart for the fourth time and run it without
the Valve Covers and see if I can tell who's the naughty rocker(s). If I
can't pinpoint them then I'll back them all out again, check my new rods
to see if they are bent (just to be safe) and hand tighten them while
bumping the engine, then I'll give the instructions below a shot.

Anyone know a way to find the over tightened valves easily????

I REALLY appreciate all those who responded both on the list and
privately. You have been a tremendous help, I hope one day to be able to
repay the favor. If anyone has anything to add please let me know;-).

Thanks a ton,

I'm sensing 2 problems.

you said 7.1 roller rockers/ DAMN. are the valve springs sticking out
the hood? hehe.... sorry.

anyways. you said you "Torqued" the 9/16 nut down until there's zero
lash? On roller rockers, you're supposed to start the motor without the
valve covers, loosen the 9/16 hold down bolt until that
rocker/lifter/pushrod starts to "tick tick tick" then you tighten it
until the ticking goes away..
you then give the nut another 1/2 a turn and tighten the allen screw
in the middle.

I think when you set it down to "zero valve lash" you pushed the valves
in a little so it's somewhat open not allowing compression in the
cylinders. If that's true. I bet your starter is winding hella faster
too (give me credit on that one, happened to me :) )

so, take those valve covers off and try readjusting your rockers./

<<I tried to fire her up. Ran the starter for 5 second intervals and
after 3 tries waited a while to make sure I didn't fry my starter too.
The damn thing won't start, it turns over, doesn't even rumble like it
wants too, I can smell a little gas after doing this a while so I know
she is getting fuel. But I can't get her to run. So, I thought the
coil free arching earlier might have been the problem, so I switch to a
BRAND new MSD SS Coil and have the same results. I sat and check
everything over and over but can't find anything wrong. I know you guys
can help get me running again! Any ideas??? Thanks,
