You could have water pump problems, however, I can't believe it doesn't heat
up enough at idle to open the t-stat...unless you're not igniting any
fuel...in which case your engine would be awfully quiet. Two things to
check:
1) Make sure your system is full of coolant.
2) Make sure you don't have a radiator core problem. When was the last time
you had your system flushed? Your radiator may need cleaning or judging
from the age may need replacing. If you do replace it, do yourself a favor
and get a lifetime warranted one. The difference is about $30, well worth
it.

Subject: DML: Still overheating !
My '91 Dak was overheating. Replaced the thermostat and the problem is
still there. Here is what I see. I can let the truck idle in the
driveway all day and it's fine. But if I drive it on the highway for
awhile (temps are fine). Once I get off the highway and stop at a
stoplight and it overheats. The upper radiator hose is "ribbed" so it's
quite thick but I squeezed it almost closed with a set of channel lock
pliers and didn't hear any flow trying to get by the restriction. The
radiator, doesn't look all that great inside but it holds pressure.
I'm guessing that at idle, I never let the truck get hot enough to open the
thermostat. Driving on the highway got the engine temp up and the
thermostat open. When I slowed down the water pump isn't moving enough (or
any) water through the engine so it overheats.
I THINK the water pump is dead but at ~$70.00 I'd like to get your informed
opinion on the matter. I drive the truck quite a bit but it has 130,000
miles on it (motor runs great) and don't want to dump a ton of money into
it or I'd replace both the pump and the radiator.
SPECIAL thanks to the guy that described the location of the A/C
drain. PERFECT !!! It was clogged with a whirlybird. When I pulled it
and the A/C snot along with it, about a quart of water poured out. Hell of
a lot better going out the drain than into the truck.
