Subject: DML: where's my oil going?

93 5.2L, only mod is a K&N 14"x3" filter. I had the oil changed
at 92,860 or so miles, it now has 95,525 or so miles. At 94,900,
I noticed I was two quarts low, so put 2 quarts of 10w40 in.
Monday, I drove to Hilton Head Island, SC for a job interview (about
260 miles), and drove back today. When I got back, I checked my
oil again, and couldn't find a drop of oil on the stick. So, I
started doing the "put one quart in and check the stick" thing,
and it took 3 quarts to fill it back up. So, in just less than
3,000 miles, I've now put 5 quarts of oil in my dak. Needless to
say, I'm worried about it. I've looked all over the engine as best
I can, and can't spot any leaks. The plugs don't appear to be
fouled. I'm stumped... Any ideas? Just to be safe, I have a case
of oil in the club cab. :(

I'm not sure if this info helps in any way, but I seem to average
15 to 17mpg, regardless of whether I keep my foot out of it or not.

I sure hope this will turn out to be a really really simple thing...

jim
