Actually the distributor "set sync" is not related to ignition timing at
all - instead it refers to the syncing of the fuel injector firing with the
intake valve opening event for each cylinder. Hence the term SMPI -
Sequential Multi Port Injection.

All ignition timing (base + advance) is done in the computer using the
crankshaft sensor to reference crankshaft degrees. It looks for its mark,
waits the appropriate time, then fires the coil. The only time the dist
even comes into the picture is at startup for determining when the crank is
on the firing stroke.
