Jon Smith had a solution he posted a little while ago:

A scanner that'll do dist. sync will cost you a grand or better... the
quick and easy way (and pretty dang accurate also) is to bring the motor to
TDC on #1, remove the dist. cap and align the rotor tip w/ the mark "TDC 1".
I line up the trailing edge of the rotor tip to the mark (on the black plate
under the rotor) and it is right dead on the mark when viewed with the scan
tool.

Ron, sorry about the mix-up the other day, on turning the distributor to
change timing. How do you know how far to turn the distributor? Does it have
to be hooked up to a diagnostic machine, or do you just go by how well the
