:-) Well, only partially. You were correct in your assessment
that nitrous simply provides more oxygen for the engine to burn.
It is indeed up to the fuel system to match that with the correct
amount of additional fuel (in a dry system), though there are
"wet" systems whereby the additional fuel is injected separately
of the engine's normal fuel distribution system; usually via a
plate or nozzles.
