NASCAR's cop-out

NASCAR released their report on Dale Earnhardt's fatal crash yesterday
and "disgust" doesn't begin to express how I fell about it. Any other
race sanctioning body like CART, IRL or even the secretive FIA when
faced with a fatal crash during a race, especially if it involved a
major star, would be falling all over themselves to come up with new
rules, regulations and mandates to try to prevent another such
occurrence and to put some meaning to the tragedy. What we got from
NASCAR was a six month million dollar finger pointing, cover-your-ass
cop-out that put the blame everywhere but with NASCAR. They must be
paying close attention to the Ford/Firestone soap opera. The closest
they came to making any changes was a lukewarm suggestion that drivers
wear the HANS device (which most drivers are already doing anyway).
Apparently, all NASCAR sees in the death of Earnhardt as well as Adam
Petty and Kenny Irwin is the possibility of some bad press and their
main concern is to prevent that. I'll still watch NASCAR racing
because I like the racing and the people involved, but for NASCAR
management I have nothing but contempt.
