Rethinking my stereo plans

After talking to a few people (and shops) face to face, I'm utterly
confused as to what I want to do with my stereo. I've got an Alpine head
unit right now, with the base speakers.

I don't want to spend a ton of money, I just want something that'll sound
crisp and clear. I'm leaning towards Boston Acoustics speakers, but the
shop I went to last weekend said unless I'm going to amp them, the Rally
series isn't a good match, and to get the lower-end FX series. So now I'm
thinking about an amp + Rallys.

Questions:
How hard is it to install speakers & amp myself (well, with a friend)?
If I get separate tweeters, where's a good place to mount them?
Where can I put the amp? Is under a front seat clear enough?
How big an amp should I go with? Any recommended brands/models?
Will I need a separate amp for a subwoofer, which will come probably next
spring at the earliest?
