I believe 9" would be the optimal rim width for a 255-40.
I have 275-40-17's on 17x9 rims on the front of my barracuda. 9.5 would
have been better but they won't center the wheel in the wheelwell and I'm
using every 1/4" in the front of that car. Anyway the point is the 275's
work great on 9" so 255 will do even better.

I have a friend running 275-40-17 Kumho Ecsta 712's on stock RT rims and
they are great. ($106 a piece for aggressive ultra high performance Z or W
rated tires).

Are you trying to go with a shorter tire? Or do have a deal on that size?
Because a 275-40 would be superior to a 255-40. The 275-40 is closer to the
stock diameter though still shorter than the OEM 255-55's.
