Not true. The 5224 has an "extended power tip" which puts the electrode
farther into the combustion chamber. THAT is the difference you saw. A
3923 will fit just fine in the 4.7L, and the elctrode will not be inside
the plug hole, it will be where it's supposed to be.
Plugs are not designed to the engine. If that were the case, they'd be
insanely expensive.
The "correct plug" per the book may be the AP5224, but experience on the
DML shows that others work quite well. Platinum doesn't conduct as well as
copper - it's used because it lasts longer, so that manufacturers can claim
their "100,000 miles before the first tune-up." And there's a silver
lining in everyone's pockets except for the consumer, because it's a much
more expensive material than copper.
Everything I see/hear at auto parts stores I take with a very large grain
of salt after:
A) one attempted to tell me that a 180 thermostat would ruin my engine
B) another got snippy when their computer couldn't find my TB gasket, so I
asked for a Jeep one instead - "why'd you say Dodge if it's for a Jeep?" -
because your computer doesn't have a listing for the Dodge and it's the
same engine, you NAPA a-hole
C) another they refused to even sell me non-factory-size tires
