RE: 4x4 or 2x4

I was told my insurance was going to be less because mine was a 4X4 since it
was bigger and all. Didn't make a whole lot of sense to me since there are
more things to break on a 4X4..... Just what the insurance agent told me. I
wasn't inclined to argue with him..... I typically don't use the four wheel
drive much other than in the winter time either but, when I do occasionally
come across something that does require four wheel, it's nice to have.
Things can be more expensive with a 4X4 though. Try changing a clutch when
you have to remove the transfer case as well. Adds a lot of labor time onto
the bill. Bigger tires cost more. I can guarantee you though, the first time
you drive a 4X4 in the snow, you'll be glad you got it. Nothing quite like
blasting off the line at a stoplight, leaving all the other little front
wheel drive cars spinning their tires in the snow!

Insurance, I'm not sure. When I called to get insurance on mine 2 1/2
years ago, they didn't ask 2WD vs. 4WD, and last time I got quotes online,
I don't think that was a question either.

Gas mileage will be lower.

Maintenance:
When you have to replace tires, it's all 4 at once.
4WD tires usually go for more $$$.
You have a second differential, plus transfer case, to change fluid in
(Jiffy Lube nails me for $120 on my yearly visit for both diffs, t-case and
engine oil).
All the stuff you break when you go 4-wheelin' :)
In general, more moving parts, more seals, bearings, etc. to be concerned
about.
