Pinging or knocking is when the fuel isnt burning at a high flash point as
it is combusting with the air. sometimes altitude changes affect this, bad
octane gasoline.water in gas.. The on & off you hear could be the AC
compressor, if your heat is turned on,, my truck does the same thing. and
the idle is a little more on the high side.
