Darren,
Exhaust manifolds glowing red is a significant clue. Enough heat to cause a
noticeable red color on a cast manifold sounds to me like exhaust
restriction and the most likely cause of that much restriction is the
converter beginning to break down and plug up. Typically with that much
restriction you would see a decrease in performance too.
