I don't really think much about performance in the winter, aside from "hey,
that's some mighty cold air I'll be pulling in". We got so much snow here
in Syracuse last winter that there was never a good time or place to play
around going fast.
Taking the chip out and leaving the 180 stat in will not hurt anything.
Since this combination seems to be causing trouble for the computer, I'd
take the chip out and see if it clears up the codes. If it does, leave the
chip out till April or May, but there's no reason to change the stat back
to stock.
