Kevin,
It does not put any strain on the transmission. What holds your vehicle in
place is the compression of the engine, not the transmission. Only
additional wear on anything is on your clutch disc. This is the trade off.
Wear your brake pade, or wear your clutch disc. The less you slip the
clutch the better.

Subject: DML: General Question

I saw a post awhile back about using the parking brake to relieve undue
stress on the tranny...does this apply to Manual transmissions as well?

I ask because I recently replaced my clutch and I have particular habits.
One, I tend to use downshifting as a way of assisting in slowing
down....more out of habit than anything.
Secondly, I routinely leave my truck in first gear when I park it.....my
reasoning is that if the e-brake ever fails...I still have it in gear to
prevent rolling.

Based on these two conditions...am I putting undue stress on my
transmission? Will these habits of mine reduce the life expectancy of the
tranny?

TIA
Kevin
