ax-15 to nv-3500

When I did my 318 conversion, I used the AX-15 until it gave out. (5,000
miles) To convert over to the NV-3500 all I needed was the new tranny, and
driveshaft. The spline count on the output shaft is differnet than the AX-15.
THe shifter assembly came with it. THe shifters are differnt BUT you can use
the shaft just unscrew it from the shifter assembly. YOur flywheel should
work, the v6 and v8 flywheels are physically the same size. THe bolt pattern
for the clutch is just differnet. OH the input shaft is the same as well.
SO the nv-3500 will slide into your v6 flywheel and clutch. SOrry is this is
kinda confusing, it's kinda late and IM tried.
Hope it helps some..

Well, Dave- since the 3.9L V6 and the 318/360 share the same bellhousing, an
NV-3500 will physically bolt to your engine. In fact, the '00 and newer V6's
use an NV-3500. As for the rest of your stuff, you would need the following:
A crossmember/mount from a '96 4wd 318/NV-3500 truck(If it's any different,
I'm not for sure), a shift tower/shifter(should come with the NV-3500 you
find), possibly a slave cylinder and/or clutch master cylinder for the
NV-3500 application, and obviously a clutch disc, pressure plate, and
possibly a flywheel(depending on what condition yours is in). As for your
previously purchased clutch disc/pressure plate, it will work as long as the
input shaft splines are the same. HTH,

Subject: DML: tranny swap-NV3500 from AX-15?
Date: Sun, 2 Dec 2001 18:05:21 EST

bad news, looks like the sychros are shot on my AX-15 tranny on a '96 3.9L
4x4 (manual) after 140,000 miles...shifting into 2nd and 3rd is a b!tch...
Jon Smith suggested looking into possibly replacing it with a beefier
NV-3500 tranny...has anyone done this? Is it a bolt-in swap or is there more
to it? Another question, I have a new centerforce clutch and pressure plate
that hasn't been installed yet, for the current tranny, would I need
different size clutch parts if I went to a NV3500?

thanks!
