Re: Synthetic fluid for 45RFE?

Wow, this just keeps getting more complex- now we have evidence of a 45RFE's
with ATF+3 factory fill. I'd now be willing to bet that the '99 and early
production '00 Jeep GC 4.7L's had a ATF+3 factory fill in their 45RFE's. The
ATF+4 fluid will mix/interchange with ATF+3 in transmissions originally
designed for ATF+3, but it doesn't work the other way. If you have a '00+
with an original fill of ATF+4, apparently you can't(read: probably
shouldn't) add or change with ATF+3. Remember that some people had a problem
with their early production 45RFE's not being able to seat and seal the
dipstick and fluid was being expelled out of the dipstick tube?? What if
somebody such as yourself has an early production ATF+3 filled 45RFE
transmission and has the problem of the fluid expelling/dipstick sealing?
The dealer will replace the dipstick with an updated part #. What does it
designate on it? ATF+3 or ATF+4? Maybe we need to ask somebody who had the
TSB/update performed on their truck. As for the filter kits, I wouldn't put
a Fram filter on a Yugo, much less on a Dodge, so I don't even consider
them. Wix on the other hand, I think I got them straightened out last week.
Look for updated part#'s and actual production in a few weeks. I was
contacted by the WIX rep after writing him a letter and describing the
problem to him. When I explained to him what the situation was, he quickly
sent out a stock pull and part#/sales update. He called for a stock pull of
the filter kits that were for the "42RE/46RE", but numbered for the 45RFE
P/N. The kits will be re-labeled with the P/N corresponding to the 42RE/46RE
transmissions. Pioneer has a P/N out for the 45RFE's, 2wd and 4wd, but still
have not produced them. HTH,

Actually my 10/99 45RFE has ATF3. It says so on the dipstick. I heard that
the ATF 4 will misc with the 3. On filters, only one aftermarket company I
have found actually knows the difference between the 45 RFE and the other
(46,44,42). ATP (Automatic Trans. Products). They have separate listings
for 2wd and 4x4 and they ARE different from the older pans. The dealer
p/n's cross exactly to these #'s. I have them on order since mines
approaching 25k. WIX, and fram list the same kit for the 45 RFE as for the
727/904 style trannies. Its not right.
