Just one click when the pedal is depressed, and a very slight noise when the
pedal is returned to the switch (this was with my head under the dash, so
that one was magnified).

I believe the click you are talking about is the
switch that turns the brake lights on. The switch
senses that the brake pedal has moved enough to turn
the brake lights on. It is just one click every time
you push. Not a constant clicking right??
