5000 is a somewhat broken-in, but in my experience with several
high-performance late-model engines, 15,000 to 20,000 is where you start
feeling more power. I would go with the factory recommended oil changes,
maybe giving the first one at 1,000 miles. I have had several engines
reaching 200,000 with few problems. My secret is to change the oil every
3000, then start using an additive like Slick50 after 75,000, then every
50,000 miles. It works, I've had about 450,000 between the last three
pickups I owned (not counting the 99 Dak).
