I have a 97 and I've found upshifting at very high rpms into next high
gear can sometime grind em... But never really had a problem with
reverse... I honestly cant think of a time its even grinded...

Robert,

I have a 98 5 spd. I have found it very easy to hit reverse when
shifting
out of 5th. I think it is a design flaw, but have just learned to be
careful.

Also installed a Hurst shifter which helped some.
