In fact, SRs took off and met a tanker, and then filled up. They were
basically flying fuel tanks. The planes were known as "wet wing" aircraft,
that is, there were no bladders in the tanks. The skin of the craft was the
tank, and they had to build them "loose", to allow for expansion due to heat
at speed. The skin expanded, and the tanks then sealed. To keep the skin
from overheating, the fuel was circulated throughout the plane much like
your Dak's radiator.
