I saw once (I believe on the Discovery Channel) that the original
designation of the plane (after A-12) was to be RS-71. However, when
President Johnson was giving a speech at the official introduction of
the plane he misspoke and called it the SR-71. Instead of correcting
him, the Air Force changed the name of the plane.
