Thanks for the info, but it's fixed... sorta.

The thing starts now with no trouble, but I'm going to put a new starter
motor and attached solenoid into the bastard because the starter is 10 years
old. Plus the guy I bought it off of said it has had starting problems in
the past, but they were "fixed". He probably fixed it like I did, by
bashing the crap out of the solenoid... :-)

I figured the whirring was the fuel pump...
