I hate to say it but how would mud go down the dipstick. Sounds more like
burnt fluid that's gummed up. :-(

Subject: DML: Well, I am home from the BBQ
However, that's the best I can say. Saturday night I had a little
tranny trouble - lost OD and 1st. Jon read & cleared the code. This
morning I decided to take the back roads to be safe, and found that I
had (by some miracle) all gears in perfect working order.
Jon's to East Bloomfield, no problem. East Bloomfield to Geneva, again,
no problem. Leaving Geneva, I lost 1st and OD again.
I limped to Camillus at 45 MPH, at which point I said "no more" and set
'er down at a Sunoco and called for a tow. 90 minutes later, I got
picked up. The Dak is out in the parking lot now.
For those who saw the truck come and carry away the Jeep w/ the busted
axle, it was the same guy driving the truck today. I guess a LOT of the
Jeeps ended up getting towed over the course of the weekend.
I'm bumming a ride to work in the morning, then limping up to the dealer
at lunchtime and getting a ride back to the office. From there, the
head-scratching begins.
A buddy came out and waited for the tow truck with me, and he had the
good sense to pull my tranny dipstick. There's mud on it. In spots all
the way down. Now, this could be mud, or it could be clutch material.
I'm praying it's only mud, and a flush will clean it out.
If this turns into a tranny rebuild, the Dak never goes in the dirt
again. At least not till I've got something I can trailer it on.
