Typically that smell means the oil has been in the engine too long and
it should be changed. You will get that "burnt" smell in new and old
engines if the oil isn't changed regularly. However it may or may not
be more prone to happening in an older engine. I'm not sure.

I'm not too informed on current tranmissions - but I have the two
Chrysler a-500s in my 89 Dakotas, that I would love to see melted down
to a pile of ball bearings.
