I have never heard of this filter and haven't given it a real in depth
look, but just a glance at their web site set up red flags all over
the place - they seem to have some real problems. Please correct me
if I have come away with incorrect info but here is what their web
site appears to be saying:
Frantz: "Don't CHANGE your oil, CLEAN your oil continually..."
Me: They didn't specify, but I assume they are advocating leaving
the filter in place and running the same oil. It doesn't work
like this - I don't care how well it filters, oil breaks down,
which is a big reason why it should be changed. Unless you can
test your oil occasionally to see when it is time to change, the
most economical way is to just replace the oil at predetermined
intervals.
Frantz: "Most cars come equipped with filters. Yet, you have to keep
changing the oil, changing the filter cartridge, and then, you
still end up putting miles on that engine while running on
dirty oil!"
Me: Ummm, what? If you change the oil and filter, how is it that
you are now running on dirty oil? (You just changed it,
remember?)
Frantz: "the Frantz has a 5 year money back guarantee if your oil does
not stay ANALYTICALLY clean"
Me: What the heck is "ANALYTICALLY clean"? They don't see fit to
define this term, though they use it all over the place. Makes
me wonder how good the guarantee is if there isn't even a basis
for judgement! (How do I prove that my oil is not analytically
clean?) :-)
Frantz: "If you are not using the Frantz Filtration System, you are also
adding to the consuption of non-renewable resources, toxic waste
and other pollutants!"
Me: Ahh, yes. Lets throw them an enviro-nazi guilt trip; that'll
get the Sierra Club members buying them, at the very least!
Frantz: "Here's How It Works: The oil in your engine has four important
jobs to do... CLEAN, COOL, LUBRICATE, SEAL"
Me: Ok, and how exactly does that explain how the Frantz filter works?
Also, I can buy the first three jobs, but sealing? Engines have
"oil seals" which are used to seal the oil! How can something
which needs to be sealed be a seal itself?
Frantz: "A popular type of spin-on filter is shown here. Because it has to
handle the entire oil flow rate (about 10 quarts per minute) it can
only trap the larger foreign particles. Other abrasive particles
that can wear out your engine go right on through!
In addition, this type of filter has a by-pass valve: under cold
starting conditions, or when the filtering element is too dirty,
this valve opens, allowing dirty, unfiltered oil to flow through
your engine, and you never know when this happens. "
Me: Frantz then goes on to describe how THEIR filter works. Basically,
it appears to replace (or suppliment) the conventional oil filter
with a bypass valve so that the vast majority of the oil can
bypass the filter, and a small amount goes through the Frantz filter.
How is this ANY different than the standard filter which they just
got through bashing??? Also, they contradict themselves by saying
that the filter has to handle the entire flow rate but that it also
has a bypass valve in case the filter gets too dirty (obviously,
with a bypass valve, the filter does NOT have to flow the entire
flow rate)
Add in the fact that they spammed me this morning, and it all equals a
company that I sure am not aching to to business with. YMMV, but I'm
filing this one in with the magnetic fuel savers and the Tornado. ;-)
