I had a similar problem with my '96 Dak. After having one dealer
replace the fuel pump and also borrowing a coil to try, I took it to
my normal dealer and after an hour and a half of poking, prodding and
scanning, the tech finally tracked it down to a loose connection
in the plug on the bottom of the coil.

In my case, the problem would seem to happen more often when the
engine was hot. I'm assuming this was due to thermal expansion of
the plug contacts or connector itself making the gap wider than it
already was.

That might not nescessarily be your exact problem, but it does
sound similar - it could very well be an intermittent electrical
connection. Going through the wiring harness is sure a long,
painful, thankless process but its probably not a bad idea.

Assuming you can keep the truck running, you might want to try
having it idle while you jiggle various connections and parts
of the wiring harness. If it is a loose or corroded connection
in there, you might get lucky and find the general vicinity of the
problem so you don't have to go through the whole thing.

Good luck!
