While replacing the water pump on my '96 Dak 5.2L I noticed
a plug with
a 5/8" hex head on the alum wtr pump housing which remains
attached
to the cast iron block. This plug is immediately adjacent
to the harmonic
balancer at the 10:30 position.

What is its purpose ? I removed it, thinking it was a block
drain for coolant.
Doesn't appear to be - the inside of the plug was wet with
motor oil. Could it
be a port for connecting an external oil cooler ?
