What is the overall direction you're planning to take with the
truck? Do you want to keep it streetable, or street legal, or are
you going for a strictly off-road rig?

The reason I ask is, if you don't need an overdrive, I would
probably drop in a 727 Torqueflite. No overdrive or computer
controls, but depending on your other plans, that might not
be a problem. You could also use an A518 which is an overdrive
tranny based on the 727. If you are planning to use a computer
controlled engine, you would probably need to use a 5 speed
computer so the computer isn't trying to control the tranny.
Who knows, by the time you're done you may end up with a
carb or aftermarket fuel injection. :-)
