The fan assy (fan and shroud) are 4" deep. BUT, the front of the fan motor
extends forward of the shroud about 1/4". So you really need about 4 1/2
inches clearance, or offset the unit so the fan hub and WP are not in line.

I might be wrong here, but wasn't there a pickup coil in
the distributors of some of the older Gen IIs. ? I've replaced
several in older fords and mazdas. Usually though they will
just crank and not start, but had a few that would run a few
seconds.

Ok, I need some tips to help jolt my mind. Truck died 3 times Sunday, after
the third time it would not restart at all.
No spark, no fuel inj. pulse, although I do have fuel pressure (doesn't make
sense since the ASD kills power to the pump).
Replaced the crank sensor tonight after determining the stocker had expired.
Truck started and ran for all of about 5 seconds, now we're back to sq. 1.
I still get 14v from the 8v signal wire going to the sensor, which is higher
than battery voltage.
PCM generates a very high pitched whine, even when the key is off and
removed from the switch. I can unhook the coil harness, or crank sensor
harness and the whine will cease. It will only re-occur after switching the
ignition to "ON".
I tried swapping PCM's, when I install the MP PCM, the ASD relay trips like
mad.. a VERY audible trip, sounds like a drunk playing spoons with a pair of
chopsticks.
OTC Scantool will not communicate with either PCM, but I cannot rule out a
problem with the scanner itself.
