Good Morning John!
I have typically put 3-80lb sand bags in the back. I have made an H-shaped
framing out of 2X4's that capture the wheel wells. I place the sand directly
over the wheels. This way I still have room for the groceries, bowling
balls, and if I'm lucky the golf clubs.
The ride is smoothed out a bit. Basically, the wheel hop is eliminated when
getting on him hard. These Michigan roads are a great test for any
shock/spring combination ;)
With the 4.7L, I barely notice the extra weight.
One thing I have done in the past is switched the wheels between my '92 and
'01. The reasoning was simply the tire tread. I have to say that the '92
looks really sharp with the 16in wheels and the wide stance. The appearance
is taken away from the '01, but the aggressive tread (General Grabbers)
really makes the difference in the slush.
HTH!

Subject: DML: Winter Weight Question
I had a question for the people that have been putting weight in their 2wd
Daks for the winter. About how much weight have you been using? This will be
the first winter in my 2K 2wd, (last yr had a 4wd and didn't need it), and I
was hoping for some ideas. This past week I built the little wheelwell box
and put in about 320lbs. It did seem to affect the handling a little bit and
kind of made the rear squat, but I had no noticeable improvement in traction
in the rainstorm we just had last night, so I don't think it is going to
help in the winter weather!!! Any ideas? Thanks, John
p.s. Also I hope my new handle 'DakotaJohn" doesn't bother anyone, when my
wife set up our new mail program she changed mine to that and didn't tell
me. I was trying to figure out who was writing since I didn't see jkp61 show
up anymore!
