Basically, as posts are sent to the DML, they are saved for the
digest. Once the digest reaches a certain size or it gets to a certain
time (whichever comes first), a new digest will be created and all those
messages that have been saved are included in that digest, and the
process starts over again.

It is definitely possible for what you described to happen because
it can take a while for a digest to get mailed out to all members.
If your name is down near the bottom of the list, it might take
an hour or two from the time the digest is created to the time it
actually gets mailed out. Of course there are other things that
can happen like network delays, etc. So basically what happened
was that the digest was probably already created and in the
process of being mailed out before you sent your post to the DML.
