I don't know if this applicable, but I had a GLH way back when that had the
shift light (the way I drove that thing, it never went out except at stop
lights <grin>, and yes, the GLH DID have the light)
Anyways, there was a "learning" period of anywhere from a day to a week if
the battery was disconnected During that time the light did all kind of
goofy stuff, including some of the stuff you described, like no light in the
lower gears.
Could you still be in that learning period?
