Hi Chris,
      I have a 98 with the 3.9 V6 and I don't think there is that much
difference in our two trucks for only 1 year. The connection you found on
the back of the air hat I think goes to the PCV valve. I could be wrong
because I just did a tune up on my truck and I can't remember where the
hose for the PCV valve goes off the top of my head. I believe if that's not
it, look for a hose that is routed to the driver side of the engine and
you'll find it. If no one else give you a good answer by this afternoon,
I'll try to run down to the parking lot at lunch and take a look at mine.
As far as the nipple sticking out of the passengers side of the intake
manifold, I had the same thing on mine. I found it when I was trouble
shooting a high idle condition. I found a rubber plug laying along the
runner at the top of the valve cover next to the manifold. When I tried to
put it back on, I found that due to age, heat, etc., it had expanded and
would no longer fit properly. A quick trip to Autozone for some replacement
plugs cured that problem. If you leave it off, it causes a slight vacuum
leak which can affect the idle of the truck. Good luck with it.
