I know 150% that the traction is better, can absolutely not disagree with
you there, that's not what i'm focusing on. It's the tire that was
mentioned.
Think about it this way, you are exposing more surface area of the tire to
the outside elements, allowing "more" of the tire to come in contact with
the road surface, this is especially true off-road. That is why the grip is
so much better.
But, that is also why the tires will wear faster.
Consider an ice cube, throw it in a room-temperature glass of water, it
lasts let's say 18 minutes.
Then take the same sized cube, crush it into chipped ice, put it in a
similar glass of water, it will last probably 1/3 of the time that the cube
did.
Different principles, but same basic idea: Surface area is key.
