Just whack it with a rubber mallet. If you hear chunks bounce around,
it's your cat. Same thing happened to my Grand National.

After its cold, have someone start your engine and CAREFULLY listen for
it from outside, that's what I did...you may not get it to rattle by
shaking it as the air pumping through it inside makes some of the pieces
bang.

Is there any other way to tell if your cat. converter is broken? I ask
because I have the same rattling noise in the mornings, but when I'm
under the truck and I bang on the cat.--it feels solid and doesn't
rattle. I have 124,434 miles on my '92 3.9L and I still have the OEM
cat (which looks to be 3' in/out). Thanks in advance!

When your cat heats up, the rattle goes away...I have had this same
problem. It is broken inside .

Subject: DML: Rattling noise in engine compartment when started cold

I am experiencing an intermittent "rattling" noise when I first start my
Dak
on cold mornings. It seems to be coming from the front of the engine
compartment, on the passenger side. I can't tell if it is coming from
an
accessory or the motor itself. The noise is somewhat subtle, and
subsides
with rising outside temps or when the engine warms up - although it can
still be detected. It is most prominent when started cold on a cold
morning. I can find nothing "loose" that would cause this noise.

I'm inclined to think it is not the valve train as the rattle "varies"
at a
steady RPM. I did have my lower intake manifold gasket replaced
recently,
which I believe involves complete and partial removal of the upper
accessories. Perhaps they didn't put things back together quite right.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Jon
