Yeah, it seems others on the Dak mailing list think the same. I'll have to
get under the truck and listen to the cat the next time I hear the noise. I
guess the good news is that it would still be under warranty since I've got
a '99 with only 38k miles.

that really does sound like the cat. make sure the hangers are all tight
and then you can hammer the cat with a rubber malot.

My rattle does not seem to vary its sound with changing engine RPM.
Also,
seems to fade with rising engine temp, so only after 5-10 minutes of
operation.

I think I have the same thing as you are describing. Mine is definitely
not
the cat! it is the motor or an accessory. mine lasts for about +/-5
seconds. it starts immediately after the cold start and then speeds up
with
the idle and the slows down and then goes away. I am thinking its in
the
valve train but have yet looked into it. is this what you are
describing?

Subject: DML: Rattling noise in engine compartment when started cold
I am experiencing an intermittent "rattling" noise when I first start my
Dak
on cold mornings. It seems to be coming from the front of the engine
compartment, on the passenger side. I can't tell if it is coming from
an
accessory or the motor itself. The noise is somewhat subtle, and
subsides
with rising outside temps or when the engine warms up - although it can
still be detected. It is most prominent when started cold on a cold
morning. I can find nothing "loose" that would cause this noise.
I'm inclined to think it is not the valve train as the rattle "varies"
at a
steady RPM. I did have my lower intake manifold gasket replaced
recently,
which I believe involves complete and partial removal of the upper
accessories. Perhaps they didn't put things back together quite right.
Any thoughts?
Thanks.
